Always Ask Your Window Contractor These Questions

Don’t Forget to Ask

You’ve decided that you’re going to need replacement vinyl or wood windows in your home. Now, you have to find and choose a window contractor. All window companies are not the same! You should have a list of questions to ask each contractor when they come to your house to give you an estimate.

What You Should Know Before Hiring a Window Contractor

Working Windows Constractor
  • Is the price for the window only, or does it also include installation? Some window companies advertise a very low price for each window so that you’ll call them, but then don’t tell you about the installation cost per window. When you call or contact them to make an appointment, first find out if the price you see on TV or in an ad includes both the window and the installation.
  • Is this estimate likely to go up or down? When you’re given the written estimate, be sure that all items have been entered and tabulated on the sheet. That means that all fees—like disposal fees and warranties—have been properly entered. Keep in mind that there are also additional costs with window installation, including trim, screen, and grids.
  • Can you help me determine the kind of energy-saving window I need? If you live in an area that has cold winters and humid summers like Pittsburgh, you’ll likely want a window with Low-E and Argon Gas. These materials help to keep warm air (and the heat from sunshine) out during the summer and cold air out during the winter. If you are getting a bay or bow window, this is especially important, because these windows contain a great deal of glass.
  • My home was built in the 60s. Does that mean you have to test for lead? Yes, any home that was built before 1978 may still contain lead paint on the sills and windows. A window contractor should be certified to remove these windows safely in order to reduce the chance of lead poisoning, which can be very serious for children. If a window contractor knows your home was built pre-1978 and tells you not to worry, you should cross them off your list.
  • Do you clean up after the installation? Window installation means that someone will be both inside and outside your home to properly install windows. There should be no sign of dust or materials around your floor inside and there should be no sign of construction on the outside, either. Window replacement companies are in charge of hauling away any remaining materials, as well as cleaning up.

Pittsburgh window installation companies can give you varying prices for replacement windows. Be sure to call at least three companies out for estimates. Give Mt. Pleasant Window and Remodeling a call today. Our contractors are experts, and we already give you a fair estimate. Your replacement windows will last a long time—so be sure to choose the right company!
